HARRISBURG, Pa. -- Two Pennsylvania dairy youth with a passion for dairy cattle, interest in pursuing future careers in genetics, and a desire to turn their own small herds into future dairies they want to be involved in, will be recognized Sunday evening, September 18 as the recipients of the 2016 Arthur W. Nesbitt All-American Dairy Foundation (AADF) Scholarships.
Amber Gabel, Newport, and Abby Sterner, Barto, were selected on the basis of their participation in youth shows and education activities at the annual All-American Dairy Show. They are pursuing degrees in animal or dairy science at universities in Pennsylvania.
The annual scholarship is awarded to past participants in All-American Dairy Show (AADS) youth activities who are attending college. Past applicants and winners have come from many states and attend school in or out of Pennsylvania.
Donna Myers, scholarship committee chair, will present Gabel and Sterner with $1000 scholarship certificates at the Dairy Farmers Appreciation Banquet, September 18 at 7:00 p.m. during the All-American Dairy Show (AADS). The Show offers competition and education opportunities to over 2000 youth from across the country each year in September at the Farm Show Complex, Harrisburg, Pa.
“We are proud to support the future plans of young dairy leaders with these annual scholarships. They are the future of our industry. Over the past four years, we have reviewed scholarship applications from young people who participated in youth education activities -- both in and out of the showring -- during past All-American Dairy Shows. They are pursuing educations for future careers that range from dairy production, genetics, nutrition and veterinary medicine to agriculture education and communications,” said Bob Heilman, AADF executive director.
Amber, daughter of Robert and Jennifer Gabel of Barnview Dairy, Newport, attends Penn State University, majoring in animal science. She plans to pursue a career in quantitative dairy cattle genetics with a zeal for dairy cattle breed improvement and genomics. In addition, she says, she would like to return home to the family farm to expand and improve the operation.
Amber has exhibited at the AADS Premier National Junior Show six years and has been an active junior member of breed associations, including Holstein, Red and White and Jersey, as well as 4-H and FFA. She has also competed in the All-American 4-H Dairy Judging Contest, All-American Collegiate Judging Contest and All-American 4-H and FFA Dairy Judging Forum.
Abby, daughter of Jonathan and Karen Sterner, of Sterner’s Dairy, Barto, attends Delaware Valley University as a dairy science major. After completing her bachelor’s degree, she plans to pursue a dairy industry career in the area of genetics or nutrition. Abby also has the desire to take over the family dairy farm or start a herd of her own.
Abby exhibited at the AADS Premier National Junior Show four years and participated in youth leadership roles as a member of junior breed associations, including Holstein and Brown Swiss, as well as 4-H and FFA.
